REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY THROUGH INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

As an innovator of new, next-generation sensor platform technology, intellectual property is a fundamental part of our work at Aligned Bio. Since our earliest days originating out of Lund University, Aligned Bio has been granted 38 patents and has numerous patents pending for technology and processes in our mission to deliver previously unattainable sensitivity and utility at commercially viable costs.

The fabrication of our nanowire platforms utilizes our intellectual property and trade secrets in the areas of:

  • Low cost mass production of nanowires;
  • Nanowire manipulation, alignment and functionalization on various types of surfaces;
  • The use of nanowires as molecular sensors.
  • Nanowire-assisted single molecule sequencing-by-synthesis (SBS)

 NANOWIRE PRODUCTION

Aligned Bio’s nanowire technology has its foundations in its patented AerotaxyTM production methodology, but has grown to encompass methods that allow various types of nanowires to be manufactured from different semiconductor materials and to be produced in high volume at uniquely competitive costs compared with  standard nanowire growth tech-nologies.

NANOWIRE ALIGNMENT 

The ability to manipulate, orient  and functionalize nanowires is a fundamental core of Aligned Bio’s technology. This ability is both patented and protected via proprietary process protocols and importantly does not require expensive traditional nanowire growth methods. Alignment and orientation has been demonstrated to be robust, repeatable and manufacturable over larger areas.

WAVEGUIDE TECHNOLOGY

The ability of Aligned Bio’s nanowire platforms to amplify sensitivity from 20-200X for assays based on optical reporter groups such as fluorophores and chemiluminescent and biolum-inescent molecules stems from the photonic properties and dimensions of the nanowires used in the technology. Upon functionalization for detecting a particular molecule, the nanowires will emit a concentrated light signal at the top of the wire where it can be detected by a simple optical imaging system.

SINGLE MOLECULE BIOMARKER DETECTION

Aligned Bio’s patented nanowire waveguide platform technology improves sensitivity for targeted disease biomarkers by orders of magnitude over standard industry protocols. With this increased sensitivity, Aligned will be enabling the next generation of immunoassays for advanced point of care diagnostics, liquid biopsies and advanced multiplexing.

NEXT GENERATION DNA SEQUENCING

Aligned Bio is developing nanowire-based, long-read DNA sequencing by synthesis that will produce highly accurate reads up to 2000 base pairs using industry standard sequencing chemistry and provide 8X the amount of genetic information in less time and cost than the industry leaders.

Aligned's patented nanowire waveguide technology enables the detection of single fluorophore labels. Acting as a single dye detector with a billion nanowires per flow cell, this patented technology will enable a breakthrough in sequencing cost, throughput and read-length.

THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE CAPABILITY

The underlying technology of these two application areas are nanowires of appropriate material and diameter to act as nano-optical fibers that collect, guide and directionally emit light from fluorescent molecules bound to their surface.

This improved sensitivity has been demonstrated repeatably by our partners at Lund University’s Physics and Immunology departments, Chalmers University of Technology,  and scientific and corporate collaborators.
